Waiting on the potential for a Disney Infinity reboot does involve a lot of, well, waiting . And some may think that after this much time, there's little hope for it. But it actually makes sense for sales of the Finding Dory Play Set to occur first, especially if the reboot would involve a different pricing structure that could otherwise adversely affect those sales. Fans would be thrilled to see the same Play Set / Expansion Game / Toy Box combo taken over from a separate licenser (myself included) - it just seems unlikely for both scale & financial risk. Producing the Toy Box as a standalone product would leverage what's already been done & leverage the community in sustaining it. But the new licenser could also treat the Disney Infinity figures like amiibos - they could pick & choose which characters would be viable add-ons to select games (rather than trying to incorporate >100 characters into the storylines of all games).
On that note, another great potential for the reboot is Square Enix. They have had great success in storylines incorporating their characters with Disney characters & themes, and the 3.0 special unlock of the Keyblade essentially announced Kingdom Hearts intentions for Infinity. Their own Kingdom Hearts game was delayed, which opens another door of opportunity - what if Kingdom Hearts figures could enhance that gameplay, either by character specials or the ability to play the game through with those extra characters? These new owners of Infinity could leverage the base & new physical sculpts, both Disney & Final Fantasy, to provide the game added depth . An added advantage for Disney Infinity fans to see Square Enix take ownership of the Toy Box is that there wouldn't be separate licensing negotiations for the other Kingdom Hearts (e.g. Final Fantasy) characters - Square Enix owns those .
It would also be very cool to see the Heartless, the Nobodies, the Unversed, & the Dream Eaters make their way into the Toy Box - they would be great for Toy Box Tales. Great. They would mix well with all of the existing characters & themes, plus the new ones, including Final Fantasy characters. In this way, Square Enix could make the Toy Box their own like no other licenser could. They have these pre-established storylines & villains that would mix with the existing IP really well. Since they'd be licensing Disney/Pixar/Marvel/Star Wars IP anyway, they'd also have lots of new ways to expand their Kingdom Hearts series in the future.
And on a side-note, it might be our best chance to finally get Goofy .
