What's the deal with these rock creatures?

I'm still trying to make sense of what they are.
They just don't seem to fit into the theme of the movie.

And does anyone notice the Brave easter egg?

I wanted to let everyone know, I got the plushies from JCPenny.com. They are two for $12!! They are smaller then the Disney Store ones but look the same! I like them smaller, because now I can get Sven from the Disney Store....and he wont be as small compared to them! It makes the sizing a little more realistic!
